There is a single tablet stone in the cemetery.

37-4 Rawlings Lanier 9.jpg (132942 bytes)            37-4 Rawlings Lanier 7.jpg (108758 bytes)            37-4 Rawlings Lanier 8.jpg (99772 bytes)

I spent about an hour with the stone tablet. As you can see, it is broken in many places. There is a long poetic text on the stone but, in an hour, I could decipher only a few words. It is VERY worn. I believe I could get more information from the stone but there is a lot of moss, bird dung, and general grime on the face of the stone.
Another interesting note, the stone slab is on a stiff metal sheet (look where the stone is missing on the left and you will see the metal sheet). I am guessing that the stone tablet was erected on the six stone legs and then later cracked. I am guessing that later on, someone pieced the tablet back together and placed them on the metal sheet to keep them from falling apart.
Once again, I find myself in the quandary.. do we attempt to extract the data from the stone to better remember the person lying there? or do we let the stone age as it is unscathed? In the absence of an answer, we will leave the stone alone, of course.
Extracting data from the stone would involve a light cleaning to remove the dirt and grime. This, however, would result in the most minute damage as small pieces of stone would also surely come off as well in a powder form. More compelling than this minute damage is the simple argument to leave the graves alone, which I wholly respect. But, all the while, my heart would break as, with every passing day, we lose the message that was supposed to be remembered for all time. Max Bennett, April 2001.
